2 found shot to death in wrecked car after fiery crash

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Two people were found shot to death after a fiery crash in DeKalb County.

Channel 2′s Tom Jones talked to stunned neighbors who were desperate to know what happened on Browns Mill Road Tuesday night.

Police said a car knocked down a mailbox, went through the yard, hit a fire hydrant and then crashed into a tree. The car burst into flames.

Two men ran away from the scene. Two other men in the car died from gunshot wounds. Their identities have not been released.

Neighbors said that two men then returned to the car, grabbed a gun out of the wreckage and drove off.

One man, who has been arrested for murder, said he didn’t do it. Davontavious Smith now faces two counts of felony murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

Jones talked to Smith’s mother, who didn’t want to be identified. She insisted her son did not kill the victims.

“He didn’t do this,” she said. “My son didn’t do this. My son got asthma.”

She said that Smith just happened to be passing by.

“He has nothing to do with this, and they arrested my son because somebody recorded my daughter’s car pulling off,” she said. “They was on the phone with 911 as they were pulling off.”

The mother said Smith and his friend called to get help.

“So why would be son call 911 and his friend call 911 if he had anything to do with this?” she said. “They got the wrong person.”

Jones spoke to Smith in jail. He said he wasn’t capable of doing what he is accused of.

“I’m a big dude,” Smith said. “I can barely run down a hallway without getting (winded).”

Neighbors said they saw Smith run from the initial crash and then return to the car. Police are searching for the second man who ran away.
