Gwinnett County fire crews were called around 5:33 a.m. Friday to a home on the 300 block of Village Green Court SW after a 911 caller reported a kitchen fire.

The caller told dispatchers she had escaped the home but that two other people were still inside. More callers reported seeing flames coming from the roof.

Firefighters arrived about seven minutes later and found heavy fire and smoke coming from the single-family, split-level home.

Crews immediately began attacking the fire while other firefighters searched for the two people believed to be inside. Search teams found two adults in separate upstairs bedrooms and removed them from the home.

Both victims were taken to medical crews outside, where they were pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.

TRENDING STORIES:

The surviving resident told firefighters she was awakened by a crackling sound. She discovered the fire in the kitchen, escaped and called 911.

Fire investigators determined the fire was accidental and originated in the kitchen.

Fire officials also determined there were no working smoke alarms inside the home at the time of the fire.

The fire was brought under control at 6:17 a.m.

Four family members lived at the home, but only three were there when the fire happened. The American Red Cross is assisting the surviving family members.

Fire officials are reminding residents to make sure working smoke alarms are installed inside every bedroom, outside sleeping areas and on every level of the home.

They also recommend testing smoke alarms monthly and staying in the kitchen while cooking. If a fire occurs, residents should leave immediately, stay outside and call 911 from a safe location.
