Guard dog takes bite out of burglar after attack

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — Rockdale County deputies are searching for a burglar who was caught in the act and attacked by the victim's dog.

An investigator told Channel 2's Carl Willis the property owner arrived at the home on Biarritz Court in Conyers and noticed the backdoor was open.

He was unarmed, but he had all the protection he needed.

"At that point, he goes to his truck to get his guard dog, his Belgian Malinois, and goes back in to clear the house," said investigator Michael Camp.

Deputies said the owner bought the home as an investment and the property was vacant.

Investigators said the owner was just passing through to take a look.

"The suspect runs down the stairs, kind of bum rushes him, and actually knocked (the owner) back and knocked a hole into the sheet rock when he hit him," said Camp. "At that point the dog was very upset that his owner got attacked, so he jumps on the suspect and bit him on the shoulder."

The burglar was able to get up and run out of the back door.

Deputies were still looking for him late Monday, but they said he could be seriously injured by the dog bite.

Area hospitals were notified about the incident and to look out for anyone with similar injuries.

"The dog jumped into action and jumped on the suspect," said Camp. "He did as he was trained to do."

Investigators said the suspect was not able to take anything from the home.

They said he is 6 feet 3 inches tall and 250 lbs. They said he was wearing a red sweatshirt with grey sweatpants.
