Georgia man arrested, more expected in mass shooting that left 1 dead, 7 injured

HAMPTON COUNTY, SC — A 40-year-old Georgia man is being held without bond in connection with a shooting that killed one person and wounded at least seven at an event after a festival in the small South Carolina town of Yemassee.

The Yemassee Police Department announced on Monday that Yogeskumar Rasikhabi Patel, of Savannah, had been arrested, news agencies reported. He’s charged with one count each of attempted murder and unlawful carrying of a firearm. A call to police early Tuesday to see whether he had an attorney was not immediately returned.

Officials say more arrests are expected as the investigation continues.

The shooting occurred early Sept. 19 outside a convenience store where a DJ was performing after the Yemassee Shrimp Festival. Yemassee is about 60 miles (97 km) west of Charleston.

Police Chief Gregory Alexander has said previously that multiple fights broke out and then one person opened fire. That led to others starting to shoot as well, with three or four people shooting guns.
