ATLANTA — The Georgia Lottery announced it has raised $273.6 million for education for the first quarter of the 2017 fiscal year.
According to the lottery corporation, the new total is $19.7 million more than last year's record first-quarter.
“We’re pleased that our fiscal year is off to a record-breaking start,” said Georgia Lottery President and CEO Debbie D. Alford. “Our robust performance is excellent news for the Georgia Lottery-funded HOPE Scholarship and Grant Program and Pre-K Program. Our success has a direct impact on Georgia’s students and families who benefit from these important programs.”
This new record comes after a record-setting year for the Georgia Lottery. In the 2016 fiscal year, the lottery raised $1 billion for education for the first time in a single fiscal year.
Fiscal year 2017 first-quarter profits also include funds generated from coin-operated amusement machines (COAMs) in Georgia.
The Georgia Lottery’s first-quarter profits bring the total raised for educational programs in the state of Georgia to more than $17.8 billion since the lottery’s inception in 1993.
Since then, more than 1.7 million students have received HOPE scholarships, and more than 1.4 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary pre-kindergarten program.
