GDOT to shift lanes along 316 over weekend

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — There's another major traffic shift coming to one of the busiest intersections in Gwinnett County.

On Sunday morning, the Georgia Department of Transportation will open new temporary lanes on Highway 316 at Georgia 20.

GDOT is shifting traffic off 316 to begin the work to lower the existing road.

On Friday, Channel 2 Action News spotted new signs and new signals preparing drivers for the shift.

"We will keep two through-lanes on each direction of 316, plus have right and left turn lanes," said GDOT spokeswoman Teri Pope. "Once people get used to the traffic shift, it should increase flow because we've got more storage capacity for those left and right lane turners."

The new lanes begin about a ¼ mile from the intersection in either direction. It's the latest traffic shift as the Highway 316 makeover presses on.

Construction of a bridge taking Collins Hill Road over 316 is already underway. GDOT will construct a bridge to take Georgia 20 over 316 next.

These temporary lanes will be around for about 12-18 months.

When the project is completed, they will become the ramps from 316 to State Route 20.
