GBI: Man shot and killed by Covington police officer after resisting arrest

COVINGTON, Ga. — A man was shot and killed by a Covington police officer after struggling with police during an arrest Wednesday night, GBI said in a news release.

According to the investigators, a woman called 911 for help in a domestic violence situation. When officers arrived, the woman told them Johnny Michael Gilbert, 43, had just run away. The woman called officers a second time saying Gilbert had returned.

GBI said that Gilbert resisted arrest when police returned. Gilbert reportedly took an officer’s Taser in the struggle, after which an officer shot him one time.

Gilbert was treated at the scene but later died at a nearby hospital, the release said.

GBI will continue investigating and will report details to the Newton County District Attorney’s Office.
