CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — Two Chatham County police officers helped to save a dolphin Friday that ended up getting stuck in a crab trap.
The department said two officers with its marine patrol spotted the trapped dolphin near the Causton Bluff Bridge along the Wilmington River, which was struggling to get to the surface of the water to breathe.
The officers said an entire trap was wrapped around the dolphin’s tail, and it was dragging another.
With the help of the owners of the crab traps, the four were able to pull the dolphin into the boat so it could breathe and freed it from the trap.

The police department said the dolphin had some minor injuries from the rope attached to the traps and it was able to swim away to rejoin its pod.
“We’re grateful that we could respond quickly to help, and that this story has a happy ending for the dolphin,” the department said in a Facebook post.
