‘All clear’ at Emory at Oxford after reports of someone with a gun on campus

OXFORD, Ga. — Emory University says its Oxford campus is all clear after school officials asked students to shelter in place due to a police emergency Friday afternoon.

The university tweeted that an emergency unfolded at Murdy Hall, but have not given details on what happened.

According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 caller reported that someone had entered Murdy Hall, which is one of the four dorm rooms on campus, with a gun.

Multiple agencies were at the campus to investigate. School officials said they found no threat to the community.

Emory’s deputy police chief issued a statement, saying;

“I understand that many at Emory—students, faculty, staff, parents and families—were deeply shaken and concerned by this experience. I want you to know that the actions of the Emory Police Department were pursued as a cautionary measure. We responded quickly to keep everyone as safe as possible.”

Channel 2′s Courtney Francisco was on campus Friday afternoon, where some students were still on edge.

“I really wanted to leave,” Phoebe Gentry said. “I kept on trying to think, ‘Should I go? Should I go?’ But I probably would have frozen anyway.”

Addie Travis said students have to sign in to get into the dorm.

“We’ve never had anything like this before, and like no one has a weapon that we know of,” Travis said.

Emory at Oxford is a satellite campus in Newton County.
