FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Students and staff are mourning the loss of an elementary school teacher who died at school Friday.

Derek Cleveland worked as a music teacher at A. Philip Randolph Elementary School in Fulton County.

Cleveland died unexpectedly on school grounds, school officials said. His cause of death has not been determined.

Students who opted for face-to-face learning at Randolph Elementary are in class for two full days of instruction a week. It’s unclear if students were in Cleveland’s classroom at the time of his death.

“We send our condolences to their family,” the school wrote in a letter to parents. “Our community will be working together to address this loss to our Fulton County Schools family, and grief counseling will be available for staff and students.”

Randolph principal Marissa Wilson wrote that “Mr. Cleveland has been a part of the Randolph School community for many years and was a beloved teacher and colleague.”

School officials said they will have counselors, social workers and psychologists available this week.
