Fresh off his Wimbledon success, Chris Eubanks to play in hometown Atlanta Open

ATLANTA — Atlanta native and former Georgia Tech player Christopher Eubanks became a rising star of the men’s tennis world after his impressive run at Wimbledon earlier this month.

Now, he’s ready to return home and compete in front of the crowd who knew him first. The Atlanta Open announced Tuesday that Eubanks is now part of the main draw singles field for this year’s tournament.

“We’re thrilled to be able to add Chris Eubanks to the main singles draw from qualifying at the Atlanta Open,” said Peter Lebedevs, Atlanta Open tournament director. “He’s playing the best tennis of his career and we are excited to watch him compete in his hometown. Chris adds another talented name to our fantastic main draw.”

The tournament is scheduled to take place from July 22-30 at Atlantic Station. More information on tickets can be found here.

Eubanks grew up in south Fulton County and graduated from Westlake High School. He led the Lions to the state finals in 2011 and 2013. He continued his career in Atlanta at Georgia Tech.

He quickly drew all eyes on him after he defeated No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas in Wimbledon Round of 16. In the next round, he battled for five sets against No. 3 Daniil Medvedev in a quarterfinals loss.

Eubanks’ run to the quarterfinals served as an inspiration to the tennis community, who says he has given them hope that they too can perform on an international stage.

“He just inspired me to do more. And just work harder because not every match is gonna be given to you and he had to work,” 15-year-old Makai Sales told Channel 2′s Tom Jones.

“His Wimbledon run is definitely historical. Definitely empowering to see another black person from Atlanta doing great things,” 19-year-old Kamran Mcintosh-Ross said.
