FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A north metro county sheriff's office says they've busted a new drug distribution hub.
Forsyth County Sheriff Duane Piper says the hub was part of an even larger drug ring.
The Sheriff’s Office believes this bust gets them closer to the actual supplier of the drugs because of the amount they found and how pure the drug is.
Piper told Channel 2’s Dave Huddleston he has a special message for drug dealers.
“My deputies are very good at what they do, and they believe strongly in what they do. We won't have hubs of heroin distribution set up in Forsyth County,” said Piper.
Huddleston was the only TV reporter at a Cumming home as Forsyth County deputies and K9s swept the building. Deputies arrested a man after finding close to two kilos of heroin in the home.
Channel 2 Action News obtained pictures of the seized heroin. Deputies say the drug is so pure, it hadn't been cut and packaged for distribution.
“I've personally never seen that much heroin in a place before,” said Piper.
The sheriff says they got a tip that the man arrested in the normally quiet neighborhood was going to be the supplier of heroin for the northern suburbs.
“He moved here specially to set up a distribution hub here in Forsyth County,” said Piper.
Piper says they didn't want to give away much information on the home because they don’t want to tip off others who are part of the supply chain. The sheriff says, unfortunately, where there's a supply there's usually demand.
“We have more people overdosing than we do dying in traffic accidents, so it's significant right now. And a seizure of this type takes this much more off the street,” said Piper.
In 2014, a Channel 2 Action News Investigation tracked the drug from Mexico to metro Atlanta.
A Drug Enforcement Administration official told Channel 2’s Mark Winne the majority of heroin in the city comes from Mexico.
Atlanta’s police chief says there are plans to clean up the notorious heroin area known as “The Bluff” near the Georgia Dome.
