Former President Jimmy Carter receives humanitarian empowerment award

ATLANTA — "He feels good physically, the care is going really well, he's tolerating it," said Jason Carter about his grandfather, former President Jimmy Carter, who was diagnosed with melanoma that has spread to his brain.

Channel 2's Lori Geary talked to Jason Carter at an awards ceremony at the League of Women Voters.

Jimmy Carter received the Humanitarian Empowerment Award while the former first lady Rosalynn Carter received the Empowerment Award for health because of her work in mental illness.

Jason Carter said his grandfather's "treatment is going great, he feels great."

Jason Carter told Geary he was joking with Jimmy Carter earlier in the day that he was waiting for his grandfather to slow down with his activities and that really hasn’t happened yet.

Jimmy Carter turned 91 on Oct. 1.

Jason Carter said his grandparents are in a good place emotionally because they've witnessed such an outpouring of support from around the world.

"It's people who may say I may not have thought that much about Jimmy Carter, but I'll tell you what a human life," said Jason Carter.

The couple, caught on the kiss cam at Turner Field in September, recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary.

"As my grandfather would tell you that's evidence of his expertise in conflict resolution and my grandmother would say it's her expertise in mental health," Jason Carter said.

Channel 2's Lori Geary was also honored at the event with Carter. Geary was presented with the League of Women Voter's media honor.
