SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Mike Boyce, who served as Cobb County chairman for four years, died Tuesday. He was 72.
Boyce died after he suffered two strokes and underwent surgery last week in Indiana. Boyce and his wife Judy were in Indiana as fellows in a leadership program at his alma mater the University of Notre Dame.
Judy Boyce said her husband was beloved and “a man of God who always put other people first.”
“He had never been happier than he was in the past few months, participating in this program, bicycling to campus and interacting with and mentoring students. He was having the time of his life,” she wrote on her husband’s Caring Bridge page after his passing.
Boyce was born Sept. 1, 1949 in California. He served in the Marine Corps and retired in 2001 after a career of more than 30 years.
Boyce served as Cobb’s chairman from 2017 to 2020 after he defeated Tim Lee in 2016 election.

In a statement released Tuesday, Cobb County leaders said Boyce was a true public servant and put the needs of Cobb County above anything else.
“Although the retired Marine Colonel often leaned on his military leadership skills, those who worked for him knew he had a soft heart for the county’s employees and often preached he needed to ‘take care of his troops,’” the statement read in part.
Cobb County Chairwoman Lisa Cupid worked with Boyce for four years on the board. Cupid said she is devastated by Boyce’s passing.
“He loved the county and our country and dedicated himself to making Cobb a better and more inclusive place for everyone. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this very difficult time,” she wrote in a statement.
