Body of contractor killed in Afghanistan returns home to Rome

FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. — The body of a Floyd County civilian contractor killed in Afghanistan returned to Atlanta Friday night.

Sgt. Barry Sutton and 12 others in a NATO convoy were killed Saturday by a suicide car bomber. The Sheriff's Office says Sutton, a former deputy, was in Afghanistan training law enforcement as part of NATO's Resolute Support Mission.

The flight carrying Sutton arrived at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport around 9 p.m and was greeted by law enforcement from across Georgia.

A large convoy then escorted Sutton’s family and his remains home to Rome.

The processional drove up I-75 North and then through Cartersville on US 441.

It is expected to arrive in Rome around 10:30 p.m. The convoy will turn right on Ga. 27 and stop at Henderson and Sons Funeral Home on Martha Berry Highway.

The Floyd County Sheriff’s office asks that people refrain from following the convoy. People are welcome and encouraged to show their respect by lining the streets as the processional passes through.

Sutton’s family will receive friends at the church at Northside on Monday, Aug. 31 at 4 p.m. His funeral will be held at the same church on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m.
