Flooding damages cars at dealership

WHITFIELD COUNTY, Ga. — Several north Georgia businesses were cleaning up Wednesday after heavy flooding caused a lot of damage.

A resident at Mill Creek said rainwater is usually ankle-deep in the area, but was more than 7 feet deep Wednesday. It has since somewhat receded, but is still causing problems at local businesses.

Al Johnson’s Volkswagen and Volvo dealership in Dalton flooded. Mud was still being mopped out of the showroom driveway Wednesday.

“The flooding is bad; dealing with the mud is terrible,” sales associate Ricky Smith said.

The water line on this desk inside the showroom marks just how high water collected inside- about 4 inches.

“I said the first thing we need to do is remove these vehicles from inside,” Smith said.

Vehicles outside on the front lawn of the dealership took the brunt of water, which rose quickly from a drainage ditch overnight.

“We’re not going to touch them or move them until the adjuster looks at them,” Smith said.

The water line on a 2015 Volvo showed just how high the water rose, damaging more than a dozen cars.

This same scenario played out at the Huntington Place Apartments. There was not as much water but just as much damage.

“There was standing water on the floor here. The carpeting soaked through the office in this area and all the way back into the clubhouse room,” property owner David Goff said. “I had tenants telling me today that it was whitecapping half a foot deep down the actual roadway in the complex.”

The Public Works Department will be monitoring the roads overnight, as more rain is expected in that area.
