GA firefighter, father of 5 dies in line of duty

MACON COUNTY, Ga. — A community in middle Georgia is remembering a firefighter killed in the line of duty.

Darrell Plank, 29, was a 10-year veteran of the Macon County Volunteer Fire Department.

Plank was at a house fire in Montezuma when a piece of metal coupling hit him in the head when the fire hose snagged on a truck.

He died Tuesday at a Macon hospital after suffering the skull fracture Saturday.

A CT scan showed Plank suffered a stroke on one side of his brain.

Firefighters say he thought nothing of putting his life on the line for others.

"Giving of himself in an unselfish manner, knowing the risks knowing that there's no benefit other than helping a fellow human,” Micah Kauffman said.

Friends say Plank was a dedicated father to five children.

The Macon County Fire Department joined with several agencies to escort his body from a Macon hospital back home to Montezuma.
