Fire damages recycling center in DeKalb County

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Large flames could be seen coming from a pile of materials outside a DeKalb County recycling facility Friday.

The fire started at Rock Tenn Recycling on Montreal Industrial Way in Tucker around 12:30 p.m.

NewsChopper2, flying over the scene, could see firefighters working to put out the flames.

With paper, plastic and machinery in the building, firefighters said they were cautious in how they attacked the fire.

“It’s paper, so it can burn. You have the machinery inside, so you’ve got electricity, so we’ve got quite a few challenges that could have been thrown our way,” DeKalb Fire Department Capt. Halani Lobdell said.

Employees had already evacuated the building before firefighters arrived, and none were injured.

One firefighter hurt his ankle battling the flames and taken to the hospital.

“We’re not sure how he sustained that injury at this time, but he has been transported and he is OK,” Lobdell said.

Kurt Cahill was across the street waiting to load his truck when he saw the smoke. He said one of the reasons the fire was under control was how quickly firefighters arrived on the scene.

“Probably within five to eight minutes after I saw the smoke I heard the first sirens, so they were on time,” Cahill said.

Firefighters said they caught a break because of the location.

“The first station is right around the corner from this facility, which is great, so they had quick response time,” Lobdell said.
