ATLANTA — A federal judge awarded $3.6 million to the parents of a toddler critically injured by a flash bang grenade during a drug raid.
Bounkham Phonesavanh, known as “Baby Bou Bou,” was in his play pen in the front room of a Habersham County home at 2 a.m. on May 28, 2014, when a SWAT team broke the door and threw the stun grenade into the room.
It landed in the 19-month-old’s playpen and exploded on his face and chest.
"Since no one will be held criminally liable, the monetary victories will have to be used as a way to somewhat offset this unfortunate preventable tragedy. Considering that this family was still held responsible for the medical bills is itself a travesty," said Marcus Coleman, President of Save OurSelves Organization
Earlier this month settlements for $1.65 million with Rabun and Stephens Counties were reached. The family also reached an agreement for $964,000 with Habersham County and the City of Cornelia, settled for $1 million.
