FBI coordinates with local law enforcement on terror threat

ATLANTA — The top FBI official in metro Atlanta confirmed an increase in threat reporting and threats that need to be assessed.

FBI Special Agent Britt Johnson says he's not prepared to say there are no known threats in Georgia.

He says there has been a marked increase in threat reporting and tips sfrom the public and threats that need to be assessed for credibility have come in.

If credible, he says some of those threats would be concerning.

Police chiefs and other high-level local, state and federal law enforcement officers were briefed by Johnson on current threats at a meeting Friday.

Law enforcement officials confirmed they spoke about ISIS sympathizers in Georgia, and a number of leads that are being investigated.

Johnson says the idea is to have metro Atlanta law enforcement on the same page in preparations for the terror threat in Georgia.

Johnson confirmed he has been asnwering detailed questions from the state on Syrian refugee vetting.

GBI Deputy Director Rusty Andrews says the metro Atlanta bomb tech community is as prepared as possible, thanks to constant communication and joint training.

Johnson says there are no known overseas threats targeting Georgia. He emphasized the public is the first line of defense and urges citizens to call police if they see something suspicious.
