Police make arrest in murder of 92-year-old man

EAST POINT, Ga. — Police say a 35-year-old man has been arrested in the murder of a 92-year-old East Point resident.

Officers believe Christopher Roberts killed Julius Dewberry inside his home on Jefferson Avenue in East Point last week.

"I'm at home and my neighbor is over there fighting for his life and I didn't have a clue about it," neighbor Ramon Frazier said.

Relatives told Channel 2 they were worried about Dewberry living alone.

"We looked in on him. There's a few people who looked in on him regularly, but there are others who knew he was alone," sister-in-law Jerri Grier-Caldwell said.

Family members said he refused to move, even after his wife had a stroke and relocated to another state for better care.

"He was so very attached to his home. We tried and tried to get him to move into a senior citizens center, but he was stubborn," Caldwell said.

Detectives said they're still examining evidence taken from the home and will not release details of how Dewberry died. Family members said they believe robbery was the motive.

"He kept money on him. Quite a bit of money sometimes," Caldwell said.

Over the weekend, Dewberry's family began making funeral arrangements for the Army veteran.

Roberts is facing murder and burglary charges.
