Excessive force allegations force Douglasville Police Chief suspension

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — Douglasville Police Chief Chris Womack is suspended with pay until June 25, pending the outcome of an independent investigation. The allegations surround a GBI investigation looking into allegations of excessive force involving a high speed pursuit in March.

On March 2, Morris Tommy Slaughter was chased by police from Douglasville  until he crashed along I-20 in Douglasville.

Only Channel 2 Action News spoke with Slaughter's fiance. Slaughter is currently in jail.

"I understand that he ran but that still don't give you no right to beat a person the way they did plus he was in handcuff what could he do in handcuffs," said Lakesha Weaver.  Weaver added that Slaughter ran from police after dropping a bag of marijuana.

According to court records, Douglasville Police Chief Chris Womack was involved in that chase. But a GBI representative said he was not the officer being investigated for use of excessive force.

"I just want justice served because they didn't have not to beat him," Weaver said.

The GBI investigation was turned over last week to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office. Both the sheriff and the chief, who viewed the video, say it showed that their officers did nothing wrong.

Slaughter is facing several charges including obstruction or hindering law enforcement, fleeing/attempting to elude an officer, possession of marijuana, driving while license suspended, and reckless driving.
