Elderly women warn of scammers selling meat

Carroll County deputies have issued an alert because they want to find two men accused of trying to take elderly women's money after selling them meat.

CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. — Carroll County deputies have issued an alert because they want to find two men accused of trying to take elderly women's money after selling them meat.

Investigators told Channel 2's Carl Willis that the men drove around in a pickup truck selling chicken and steaks.

Edna Taylor-Key told Willis she feels duped.

"I was upset and mad and it just didn't seem to me to be right," Taylor-Key said.

She says a door-to-door meat salesman who came into her home tried to steal her money.

"He started off 'I'm not a bad guy. I'm a Christian.' He was just ever so good," Taylor-Key said.

Investigators with the Carroll County Sheriff's Office believe they need to close the door on the operation.

They say the men work under the name "Steakhouse Meats" and ride around in a white pickup with a freezer unit full of steaks and chicken.

"My freezer is right in there and we put it in there," said Joyce Edwards.

Investigators say the men make a deal and get a check in hand only to come back later claiming the check got wet or was damaged, then they demand another.

Taylor-Key put a stop on her check but Edwards says they cashed her check for $348.88. She needs every penny.

"I would certainly like to have it back, you know. We're not rich," Edwards said. "I think it's a crying shame."

Not only that, deputies say the men in their mid 20s to early 30s took back the steaks after the check cleared.

Two have come forward as victims but they believe there may be others out there.

"I think if he's doing it to me, he's doing it to other people. And I think also it ought to be stopped and something ought to be done," Taylor-Key said.
