Deputy struck by car while arresting man

JASPER COUNTY, Ga.,None — A deputy in the midst of an altercation with a man was struck by a car Monday night.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Jasper County deputy Carlos Rhodes found two possible intoxicated men walking in the middle of Pennington Road around 9:30 p.m.

Rhodes tried to arrest one of the men, but he resisted, GSP said. An approaching vehicle swerved to miss the second man, who had walked into the opposite lane, but hit the deputy and the first man, identified as Martin Cervantes, 35.

GSP said the driver stopped and rendered aid.

Both men were airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center. Rhodes suffered a broken leg and Cervantes suffered serious injuries.
