Deputies hunt driver who fled traffic stop

Crews tow away a car as evidence after a driver fled a traffic stop, deputies say.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County deputies sent extra patrol cars into a neighborhood as they hunt for a man who fled a traffic stop.

It began Tuesday evening when a Milton police officer stopped a driver pulling into a driveway on Bridle Ridge Drive. Deputies said the officer, who lives in the neighborhood, noticed suspicious activity.

"He doesn't live in this neighborhood. We don't know why he was here," Forsyth County Sheriff's Capt. Tim House said.

Deputies identified the driver as 45-year-old Kenny Askew. Deputies said when the Milton officer asked for his license, Askew ran away barefoot with a female passenger.

"We have no idea anything about her," House said.

Deputies said Askew has an extensive criminal record, with warrants out in Cobb and Gwinnett counties and charges pending in Forsyth County.

Deputies were joined by a police helicopter and search dogs in the search for Askew. They also reached out to residents for tips on Twitter. The Sheriff's Office reassured concerned Twitter users that Askew is not a murder suspect but said he is thought to be armed.

"We'd walk outside the door and they'd say go back inside the house and lock your doors and stay there," neighbor Marty Topper said.

Neighbors in the community also posted the information on Facebook to notify everyone who lives there about the threat.

"It's scary to to look out your window and see the SWAT teams with the dogs and the police," neighborLisa Weekes told Channel 2's Rachel Stockman.

House said the suspect may have had help getting away.

“It’s feasible that he had a cell phone, that he called an accomplice and had him come pick him up,” House said.
