Thieves steal flowers and mementos from family burial site

DEKALB COUNTY — Someone is repeatedly stealing flowers from grave sites in DeKalb County. One family told Channel 2 Action News it is only adding to their grief.

Earline Greer visits her family plot on Lawrenceville Highway at least three times a week. Her infant son and her husband are buried there along with other family members.

"What kind of person would come into a cemetery and take something that they know was placed in a very personal way?" Greer said.

Greer decorates the space with flowers, trinkets, benches and other things she thinks her family members would like. She says things were stolen on three different occasions.

"It's me taking care of them. It's my way of working through my grief even after all of these years," Greer said. "So when somebody just carelessly, without even thinking, takes them, they're taking a part of me."

Mary Quinn has also noticed that someone stole flowers off her brother's grave in the same cemetery.

"We just don't like to know that anybody has that kind of heart to steal flowers off a cemetery," Quinn said.

Both women say this won't stop them from bringing things to the graves. It's the only way they know how to grieve.

In addition to the stolen flowers, Greer says she finds liquor bottles and drug paraphernalia near her family's burial site.
