Police crackdown on parolees with ties to Gangster Disciples

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Police say they're working to rip apart a gang connected to at least 10 local murders. Police confiscated money, drugs and weapons during Thursday's crackdown.

A statewide effort has police looking for members of the Gangster Disciples.

Channel 2's Mark Winne was with officers as they arrested a parolee Christopher Ford.

Police say Ford violated his parole by not taking a drug test. Ford alleges he didn't know he was supposed to take a drug test.

Winne asked Ford if he was a member of the Gangster Disciples. Ford replied, "Man, that's when I was younger. I'm 33 years old, man."

Ford said he works in heating and conditioning.

Vancito Gumbs worked as a Dekalb County officer two years before he resigned while being investigated for alleged drug use. Seven months later, he was arrested on racketeering charges.

Gumbs was among 32 people charged in a federal racketeering indictment targeting members of the Gangster Disciples.

In the indictment, investigators say Gumbs bragged of being a gang hitman and often warned gang members of police activity.

Investigators say Gumbs resigned after lying about using illegal drugs.

Winne talked to another offender on parole who said he was at one time affiliated with the Gangster Disciples, who wanted to remain anonymous.

Police say the parolee Winne talked to checked out okay. When he was asked why he is staying clean, the parolee said it's the thought of doing 20 years in prison.
