DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A metro Atlanta neighborhood with at least five 2020 graduates at two different schools found a heartfelt way to honor their big milestone with them Saturday.
Grace Clowse, Noah Grosh, Ethan Jennings, Jamie Rose Martin and Rosie Driscoll all grew up on the same block of the Echo Hills neighborhood in DeKalb County. They went to two different schools -- St. Pius X and Lakeside -- but that didn’t stop them from celebrating together.
On Saturday, parents and friends arranged a drive-by parade and block party. For over an hour, cars decked out with balloons, streamers, Class of 2020 signs, as well
as teens in the backs of pickup trucks streamed down the street, honking, cheering and giving well-wishes.
Some teachers and school staff members even joined in on the fun.
"We miss you!" a teacher called out from her sunroof.
Coach Kyle Snipes, the girls varsity coach at St. Pius X came by with his family.
Neighbors who lived on several nearby streets set up lawn chairs and cheered and clapped as waves of the parade rolled through.
A parent told Channel 2 Action News that the teens are childhood friends and that parents organized the event about a month ago. The group social distanced by setting up in different yards across the street from each other. Several of the graduates’ closest friends and fellow graduates joined the block party.
“The kids had so much fun and we need some positive things on the news!” one parent told us.
While it wasn’t the graduation celebration that they probably imagined, it’s certainly one that they will remember.
