Woman accuses school employees of using excessive force on son (VIDEO)

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A woman is expressing concern over an incident at her son's school in which she said a school employee and a police officer used excessive force.

Marquisha Brown said video shows her 15-year-old son being held down by a school employee last month at Stone Mountain High School while a resource officer pepper-sprays the teen.

“What did he do that y’all were trying to kill him, cause why are y’all choking him?” she said.

Brown said the incident was the result of a fight between two other boys, and her son was part of the crowd, but did not participate in the fight.

“They’re supposed to be the adults. They stooped to the children’s level. This is why kids react the way they react,” Brown said.

She admits she doesn’t know what led up to what she saw in the video, but said even if her son was fighting, the response is excessive.

“He wasn’t fighting or anything. He’s holding his hands up. Why are you still taking that force even after he’s been pepper-sprayed?” she said.

DeKalb County Schools released a statement which said:

"The DeKalb County School District is dedicated to protecting the health and safety of its students and staff. The images in the video are troubling. The video also depicts an attempt to conclude a disruption involving multiple students, including some that failed to comply with directives by staff members."

Brown said her son was suspended and has been charged with simple battery.

He will go before the school board on Friday.

The school district spokesperson would not say if the teacher or officer have been disciplined, saying they do not comment on personnel matters.
