Management of DeKalb apartment complex infested with rats, mice, working to exterminate them

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Management at the Scenic at 2505 Apartments on Columbia Drive say they’re working hard to exterminate an infestation of rats and mice on the property.

“He’s got to go in individual buildings and set more traps,” property manager Brittany Lewis said.

Channel 2 Investigative Reporter Ashli Lincoln was at the property when management met with an extermination company Tuesday afternoon.

The exterminator told Channel 2 Action News the property has a severe infestation with roof rats.

They’re rodents who make their way in from the attic.

“It had just been neglected for a very long time,” Lewis said.

Property manager Brittany Lewis says the new management company inherited this problem after purchasing the property last year.

Channel 2 Action News was at the complex after that purchase when the property formerly known as the Forest at Columbia Apartments gave tenants only 30 days to move out before renovations began.

Our news coverage sparked protest and some tenants were allowed to stay while renovations were on going.

Monday some renters living in non-renovated units said they were not allowed to move into new units.

Lewis says renters who are not behind on rent, don’t have a criminal past with the property, and are willing to pay the increased market value for rent will be allowed to transfer.

“Just because you’re in DeKalb doesn’t mean you have to live in horrible deplorable conditions,” Lewis said.

Management anticipates the property will be fully renovated by July of 2024.
