Elementary school evacuated due to loss of water

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County school had to be evacuated Tuesday morning after officials learned its water was off.

Due to this, a school bus took children from Kittredge Magnet School to Chamblee Middle School at 9 a.m.

Nearly 500 students loaded onto buses and left the school.

A spokesman told Channel 2's Berndt Petersen the parts that keep contaminated water from backing up into the system weren't working. When it turned out to be more than a quick fix, administrators made a decision to pack all of the students onto buses and take them over to nearby Chamblee Middle School.

The school system said instructions continued as usual so a day of learning was not lost.

Those students were dismissed from Chamblee so the buses remained on site to take them home and parents who pick their children up from school were alerted to meet them there.

School officials said they could not remain on campus while the repairs were being made because they had to shut the water off.
