Powdery envelope causes scare, evacuation at Social Security building in DeKalb

DeKalb County police and fire crews responded to the office building at 3554 Covington Highway, officials from both agencies confirmed.

A scare involving envelopes forced an evacuation at the Social Security Administration building in DeKalb County Wednesday morning.

Channel 2's Lauren Pozen arrived at the scene where the front entrance was blocked off and all employees were evacuated.

Fire officials told Pozen two employees saw and touched what they thought were suspicious envelopes.

The hazmat team went inside the building to investigate the envelopes.

"We were able to get a better look at them and to make sure. We later found it was a coffee stain that we ran analysis on and it wasn’t enough powder on the other package," Capt. Dion Bentley told Pozen.

No one was hurt and there were no customers at the building during the scare and evacuation.
