Large meth lab busted directly across from elementary school

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Investigators say they have discovered a working meth lab across the street from an elementary school in DeKalb County.

After finding six kilos of meth during a traffic stop, agents got a search warrant for the driver's home and say they found 300 pounds of liquid meth, 120 pounds of crystal meth, three kilograms of cocaine, two kilograms of heroin and $150,000 in cash.

“We have bad guys that are making their poison in an area where they think they’re undetected,” said Daniel Salter, the special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Atlanta Field Division.

The large drug operation was inside a home across the street from Pine Ridge Elementary, according to investigators. Stephenson Middle School and Stephenson High School are also in the area.

“What makes these bad guys did is they moved into an area and tried to assimilate, to fit in, and unfortunately this address was directly across the street from an elementary school.

"I'm especially disturbed that this meth lab was operating directly across the street from a school," said DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James. "There's no telling how the hundreds of students there could have been impacted by the proximity of such dangerous drugs to a school.”

Agents charged two Mexican nationals with drug manufacturing and trafficking. They’re also charged with drug distribution within 1,000 feet of a school. That carries up to an additional 20 years in prison.
