DeKalb Church's Chicken back open after rodent problem

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County Church's Chicken reopened after closing down for two days to make repairs and to get rid of rodents.

The health department said Monday that the restaurant has passed inspection and has reopened.

Customer Kenya McNeil watched video taken by a DeKalb County police officer of rats running around inside of the Church's Chicken off Candler Road and Glenwood Avenue.

Channel 2's Liz Artz spoke to McNeil as a store employee delivered food she had just ordered.

"I'm just going to get my money," McNeil said.

Maj. K.D. Johnson said his officer shot the cellphone video after responding to the 17th alarm call in 30 days.  He said in that same time period, there were no break-ins or burglaries.

"The officers looking through the drive through window discovered the rodent," Johnson said.

Channel 2 Action News shot video of a handwritten closed sign Friday and spotted materials on the counter.

The health department said the business was closed for two days while repairs were made.

A sign in the drive through window showed a B rating.

The health department stated the rats likely gained access through a crawl space at the rear of the building and came in the kitchen through holes in the ceiling and walls.

McNeil got her money back Monday, even after a health inspector gave the OK for the business to reopen.

Artz reached out to Church's Chicken and recieved the following statement from Imran Syed, VP of Operations:

"There will be monthly inspections and the problem has been taken care of."
