Deck collapses, grill burns victims in DeKalb

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Several victims were at Atlanta-area hospitals Sunday morning after a deck collapsed in DeKalb County Saturday night.

Investigators told Channel 2's Mike Petchenik five of the 10 victims were being treated for mild to moderate burns at Grady Memorial Hospital. That's because the accident happened while people were grilling on the deck and coals from the grill burned them when the deck collapsed.

It happened as a family was celebrating a birthday at a home on Bridgewater Trace in Stone Mountain.

"All of a sudden we see the deck coming this way, the grill coming toward the back door and fire just on everybody. We're trying to throw water. Most of them that went to the hospital had second, third-degree burns,” said witness Althea Brewster.

At least 13 people were on the deck when it became separated from the house and fell inward, toward the house.

"This shouldn't have happened.  No beams under that deck.  This shouldn't have happened to nobody,” Brewster said.

Brewster's husband was taken to Atlanta Medical Center with a head injury after he was hit by a speaker. Her two daughters were at Grady recovering from burns.
