Newnan pastor says returning home from hospital in time for Christmas is ‘a miracle’

NEWNAN, Ga. — An area pastor and elementary school teacher is back with his family after being hospitalized for nearly three months.

Jerome Spence is the pastor of Mt. Vernon First Baptist Church in Newnan. Spence is also a teacher at Poplar Road Elementary School.

Spence’s everyday life was interrupted when he suffered from a stroke in October.

“They found a tumor on his brain, and he had two brain surgeries,” said Jamarius Spence, one of Spence’s sons.

“He went from the breathing machines to a trach. I’m a praying woman, and I prayed the whole time I was there,” said Tonya Spence, Jerome’s wife.

After two brain surgeries and months of prayers, Jerome Spence returned home to his family on Christmas Eve, just in time for Christmas.

“I really believe it’s a miracle. I’ve had some moments where I really have to cry,” Jerome Spence said.

“Every day he is remembering more and more, and the doctor said that will heal,” Tonya Spence said.

Spence’s home was filled with visitors all day. He is thankful for the support of his church, his community and his students.

“This is our Christmas present here today. We have him here at home with us today,” Jamarius Spence said.

Spence’s doctors believe he will fully recovery in about six months.
