ATLANTA — It's been 12 years since you could purchase a icy-cold Surge from a vending machine or convenience store, but Coca-Cola says it's bringing the beloved beverage back.
Known for it's bright green can, Surge was first introduced in 1996. Now, Coca-Cola is crediting an "enthusiastic fan base" for its decision to put the citrus drink back on the production line.
Surge will be sold exclusively on Amazon.com, in 12-packs of 16-ounce cans. The soda sold out within one day of online sales, but you can sign up to be notified when it's back in stock.
“Today marks an important day in The Coca-Cola Company’s history, because we have so many firsts to celebrate: first re-introduction of a brand that has been discontinued and revived due to popular demand, first launch to rely solely on social and digital media, and first re-introduction of a brand via ecommerce,” said Wendy Clark, President, Sparkling & Strategic Marketing, Coca-Cola North America. “We appreciate the enthusiasm we’ve seen from tens of thousands of fans nationwide, and we’re bringing SURGE back, in part, because of them. Future plans for the brand will depend on the level of excitement exhibited by fans across the country. This will be a great learning experience for us and a refreshing opportunity for fans.”
Coca-Cola says they may expand to other retailers depending on the success of Amazon.com sales.
The cans will have the original 1996 design.
