Cobb residents protest controversial Kennesaw housing proposal

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Signs of protest are springing up all over west Cobb County, as residents band together in a campaign to change a controversial housing proposal in Kennesaw.

"We're tired of the 'Build now, pay later' mentality. We're tired of it," said organizer Melissa O'Brien.

She and others have formulated a Facebook campaign called “No West Cobb Rezoning.”

They fear a return to Cobb's go-go building boom of the late '90s.

"Get it on the ground and build it. Then we start fixing up the problems later," complained organizer Kyle Rollins.

The group's current focus is a 183-home development on about 130 acres. Thirty acres are in a flood plain and not usable.

County documents show planners used some traffic counts nearly 10-years-old.

Cars from the subdivision would likely combine with cars from 90 new homes already approved at Kennesaw Due West and Stilesboro Roads. That development by Lennar is barely a mile away.

Builder John Weiland Homes is planning the 183-lot project.

A spokesperson emailed Channel 2's Jim Strickland and said that they will present a new plan to address some of the concerns.

The county chose not to comment until a meeting later this week.

Zoning staff has already recommended approval.
