POWDER SPRINGS, Ga. — A Powder Springs police officer came to the rescue of a runner who suffered a medical emergency while on a jogging trail last week.
Witnesses say the man was running on the Silver Comet on Oct. 29 when they saw he fall and stop breathing. They say they immediately began performing CPR on the man and called 911.

Officer Yates arrived a few minutes later and found that the man was not breathing, had no pulse and did not initially appear to be alive. Despite that, Officer Yates performed CPR on the runner for more than ten minutes.
When paramedics arrived and took over CPR, it was just a few seconds until the man got his pulse back and woke up.
Investigators say when the man was put on a stretcher, he began looking around and asked what happened.

Police later learned that the man had suffered a cardiac emergency.
“Without a doubt, if it was not for the quick actions of the citizens on the trail who immediately began taking care of this stranger, and the endurance of Officer Yates, the Silver Comet would have claimed another life,” the police department said in a statement.
