COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News was there Wednesday as authorities arrested five people following a high-speed police chase on Interstate 75 in Cobb County.
According to Georgia State Police, a trooper tried to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle that was reported stolen on I-75 near Cumberland Boulevard.
The vehicle did not stop and led police on a chase during rush hour.
The pursuit ended in a crash on I-75 near Windy Hill Road.
According to investigators, there were five teenagers involved in the incident, which sent a road worker to the hospital.
"I'm worried because I work with him, he's one of my coworkers," a construction worker said.
The construction crew near the Windy Hill Ramp heard the stolen Dodge Charger slam into a big piece of equipment after troopers say the getaway Charger hit at least nine other cars.
"I was on the wall working," a witness said. "I looked down. I was on the phone with my wife (then) I saw them running up the hill and I said, 'Whoa, what's going on.'"
Troopers caught one of the five at the crash site, but four others ran off into the Windy Hill neighborhood, forcing office complexes to go on lockdown, which frightened apartment dwellers who say the chopper and heavily armed police surrounded their complex.
"It had to be something serious because there was about 10 cars out here including the helicopter," Windy Hill resident said.
A K-9 helped track the other four teens to a breezeway at the Westminster Square apartments, catching the boys who are between the ages 17 and 19.
One suspect who is identified as Charles McDaniel had been charged in the shooting of a pregnant woman a year ago. His younger brothers face murder charges in a convenience store shooting as well.
Police told Cavitt that some in the group were involved in car break-ins, a shooting tied to an online deal, and a carjacking chase into Mableton in recent months.
Channel 2's Ross Cavitt reports all five were taken into custody and residents who saw the manhunt are simply happy the drama is over.
