Marietta police: Officer shoots man waving rifle on roof of home, GBI investigating

MARIETTA, Ga. — A man was shot by police at a Marietta home after a call about a crisis Saturday evening, according to the Marietta Police Department.

Marietta firefighters responded to a medical call at a home on Frances Avenue around 10:30 p.m.

According to officials, the caller told dispatchers that his son was in a crisis and suicidal.

When firefighters arrived, they found a man on top of the roof with a rifle.

Emergency responders sought cover and contacted Marietta Police. Once officers arrived they found and identified the man waving a rifle as a 25-year-old.

Authorities said the suspect was given verbal commands to drop the weapon but he did not comply. Instead he raised it and pointed it at the officers.

Officers fired, striking the suspect before he dropped the rifle. He was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Neither the officers nor anyone else were injured during the incident.

The incident has been turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
