Family rescued after crashing into Cobb County house

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A Georgia family was rescued in a wreck they recall could have left them seriously injured or dead.

The family was about to move into a home in this Acworth neighborhood, their large SUV loaded with the kids and their belongings.

Then, without warning, as they were cresting a hill, the brakes failed, and the SUV plowed into the living room of a house.

“When we first hit the shrubs coming down, I could brace myself, I could feel this is not good," Tammy Newsome said.

Newsome described the fear and the helplessness she felt as the brakes went out on their older-model SUV.

“There were no brakes. The weight of the car, the items we had inside, I could feel the car picking up speed,” Newsome said.

Mike Allen witnessed it all.

“I saw it crest the hill and come down at an incredible rate of speed," Allen said.

“My husband decided maybe we can hit some shrubs, go inside a yard to slow down some,” Newsome recalled.

Allen said what happened next.

“I saw it jump the curb, miss the tree and go right into the living room of the house,” Allen said. "Sparks were flying and the car was briefly airborne."

“Everything turned black on us. I could hear the kids screaming. I wasn't sure where my husband was at the time. There was a lot of commotion going on," Newsome said.

A neighbor rushed to the scene, not knowing what she would find inside.

“I pulled the passenger side open, while I'm calling 911. I opened the back door and the kids starting falling out, so I dropped my legs, and I'm catching the kids,” Laura Young said.

Then she called 911. To her amazement, no one in the wrecked SUV was seriously hurt.

“It's absolutely a miracle no one was killed. I still can't believe it,” Allen said.

On top of that, no one was home at the house where the SUV crashed.

Newsome said it was not just a brake failure.

“Our airbags didn't deploy either," she said.

She said she is grateful the family survived.

“God takes us through troubled waters not to let us drown but teach us to swim," Newsome said.

The family, who says they were once homeless, is asking for help after the wreck damaged their vehicle.
