COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Last week, Channel 2 Action News told you about a measles outbreak at a metro Atlanta childcare center.
Pediatricians say ever since, they’ve been fielding a slew of calls from parents about protecting their kids.
At Dr. Pip Spandorfer’s Focus Pediatrics office, they’re taking plenty of calls from parents since the Georgia Department of Public Health reported four cases at the daycare.

It is parents in one particular window that are particularly concerned.
“We give the first measles shot at a year of age, so it’s really the kids under a year of age who are at higher risk. And if the mom was vaccinated, the baby from zero to six months has some maternal antibodies to protect them against measles, and we’re really then looking at the kids to a six months to a year old because they have no protection,” Dr. Spandorfer told Channel 2’s Candace McCowan.
At East Cobb Pediatrics, an email went out letting parents know they can get a dose outside of that schedule, but Dr. Spandorfer is advising his patients differently.

“Right now, we’re not recommending an extra vaccine for those kids because this is one daycare with an isolated exposure. When it starts becoming multiple daycares, I think the recommendations may change,” he said.
Dr. Spandorfer is following recommendations from the Georgia Department of Public Health. As is Georgia’s Department of Early Care and Learning, or DECAL, that oversees Georgia child care centers.
“The thing that we require is that as you are enrolled in a child care program you should have your vaccination records on file with that provider within 30 days of being enrolled,” said Reg Griffin with DECAL.
At this point, DECAL hasn’t issued any guidance on more frequent checks.
