Cobb Co. officials trying to figure out why traffic light collapsed at major intersection

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Cobb County officials are still trying to figure out how a traffic light at a major intersection just suddenly collapsed.

The collapse happened late Thursday evening at the intersection of Barrett and Busbee Parkways.

Investigators are describing the incident as a big mystery since there was no major car crash or weather event that brought down the traffic lights.

According to surveillance cameras at police headquarters, investigators say they believe it may have been the result of an electrical explosion.

Even though the weather was dry and clear in the Marietta area on Thursday, government officials believe this still may be weather-related.

“That’s what they are still trying to figure out,” said Cobb Communication Director Ross Cavitt. “The leading theory is the weather has been changing, we’ve had storms move through which may be why the power lines were sagging. And then finally came close enough to create an arch and explosion.”

No one was injured but traffic was impacted for quite some time, forcing drivers to use alternate routes.
