Clayton County moves several more schools to virtual learning

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Clayton County Public School is moving even more students to virtual learning as the COVID-19 climb in south metro Atlanta.

Starting Thursday Aug 26, Kemp Primary, Kemp Elementary, River’s Edge Elementary, Michelle Obama STEM Elementary Academy, Hawthorne Elementary, Eddie White Middle Academy, Lovejoy High School, and Elite Scholars Academy will move to virtual learning through Friday Sept. 10.

Earlier this week, Smith Elementary School and Rex Middle School in the city of Rex were moved to virtual until Tuesday Sept. 7. Kendrick Middle School is also virtual until Mon. Aug 30.

According to the case tracker on the state Department of Health website, the county has roughly 709 cases per 100,000 residents as of Aug. 25, a number that has doubled in two weeks.

The district reported 21 staff members and 266 students who are COVID-19 positive the week of Aug 20.

Breakfast and lunch meals will still be available for students but that parents should contact their child’s respective school for specifics on pickup times.

The school district is reminding parents they’ll continue to make decisions on in person or virtual learning based on data provided by health officials in each of their communities.
