Church members question missing money after pastor leaves

ELBERTON, Ga. — Members of the Union Grove Baptist Church in Elberton are at a loss after they discovered $23,000 missing from one of the church's funds.

The church has made national headlines lately after the church's pastor banished Genora Biggs, 103, from worship services.

The church, who disagreed with Rev. Tim Mattox's stewardship, voted to fire him as pastor a week later, but he ignored that vote.

According to the Athens Banner-Herald, Mattox announced last Thursday he was leaving Union Grove to start a new church in Elberton.

Elliot Dye, grandson of Biggs, discovered this week that about $23,000 was missing from the building and operating funds of the Union Grove Baptist Church, the paper said.

Dye went to police about the matter, but they told him the matter is civil, not criminal.

Atlanta attorney Adrian Patrick, who represents Mattox, said Mattox and his church members were entitled to the money to help establish their new church.
