ATLANTA — For nearly 15 years, David Deutchman has been a legend at Children’s Healthcare of Scottish Rite. Deutchman earned the reputation as the hospital’s “ICU Grandpa” for his love and support shared with NICU babies.
But now, the hospital is supporting Deutchman in his own battle. Children’s Healthcare said its staff recently learned that Deutchman was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer.
The staff decided to show their appreciation by organizing a drive-by parade outside his home.

According to social media posts, one of the hospital’s NICU transport trucks and 30 cars honked and waved to Deutchman and his family as they sat in the driveway.
The best part is some of the patients Deutchman had cared for years ago also rode in the parade.
“In the words of David’s grandkids, ‘We didn’t know everyone passing by, but we felt so connected to them. All the kids he’s cared for and the employees he’s formed friendships with—he loves them like they were his own. And we felt that same love from them today,’” the hospital wrote.
