• Day care van hit, kills 2-year-old in SW Atlanta


    ATLANTA, Ga. - A 2-year-old has died after being struck by a daycare van near University Avenue and Metropolitan Parkway in southwest Atlanta.

    The child, identified as Brandy Buffington, was playing outside when the van driver, who had dropped off a load of kids, put the vehicle in reverse and accidentally ran over the toddler.

    Buffington was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition around 5 p.m., but died shortly after, Atlanta police told Channel 2's Erica Byfield.

    Buffington was in her guardian's care when the accident happened, police said. The van driver stayed at the scene to speak with police. Investigators said charges could be filed.

    Byfield saw a crowd of people crying at the scene.
