73-year-old woman killed, husband seriously injured after being hit by car in Acworth

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies are investigating a deadly crash involving a couple walking to their hotel after dinner on Thursday.

The crash happened around 7:40 p.m. on Highway 92 near Northpoint Parkway in Acworth.

The Cherokee County sheriff’s office said 73-year-old Marie Collins and her husband, 78-year-old Ernest Collins, had just eaten at a restaurant and were returning to the Hampton Inn where they were staying. A car traveling eastbound on Highway 92 struck the couple.

Marie Collins died at the scene and Ernest Collins was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the car stopped after the collision and called 911.

Deputies said the couple was not in the crosswalk at the time of the crash and were in an area that was not well lit.

The accident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
