CDC: Flu cases drop in Georgia

ATLANTA — The spread of the flu in Georgia has significantly dropped.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's flu activity map showed Georgia has fallen to a lower level after five straight weeks at the highest level. That's from flu cases reported through the first week of January.

There are 13 flu-related deaths in Georgia this season. Health officials said there were 26 flu outbreaks statewide. Over 450 people were hospitalized for the flu in the metro area.

The flu is still considered widespread in the state.

CDC officials said the nasty strain of flu going around is more dangerous to elderly people and very young children.

Flu seasons tend to last about 13 weeks, and CDC data suggests the nation is about seven weeks in, according to CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden.

"It seems we're right in the middle of flu season," he said.

However, while flu may be ebbing in some states, it's increasing in others, and it's not clear whether flu has peaked overall, health officials said.
